INTRODUCTION

If you read everything there is to read on exercise and fitness. If you hire the best trainer money can buy. If you exercise at the most modem, well equipped gym you can find. Your results will still be merely ordinary.

The building of a body is no different then how you would approach any other building project. You first must have a vision of what you want to build. What exactly are you looking to do? Don't cheat yourself. Go for it all. Once you have determined your goal, whether it be health, appearance or both, you'll have a starting point. Next, you'll need a blueprint and that blueprint should show you exactly how to go about it. After that, you'll need some help in carrying out that blueprint. You'll need a skilled worker, someone you can trust, especially with this particular building project - YOU!

PREFACE

I always get excited walking into a bookstore. The smell of new books, the colors and designs on the book covers are stimulating. "Excuse me sir, could you direct me to the fitness and exercise section?" I ask the nearest sales associate. "Three aisles down to your right." replied the attendant as I thought to myself, "This guy needs to visit the exercise section badly." Oh well, never mind. "Thank you", I replied. I was amazed at the seemingly endless rows of exercise books on everything from Pilate's to water fitness. But what caught my interest most was the section on intense exercise. I mean there was intense this, maximum intensity that. Curiously, I thumbed through each book. People must have thought I was mad as I burst out laughing at the publications and their inaccuracies. Here were unknown authors, who basically have achieved little, or perhaps trained some athlete or celebrity, and now they're authorities. Trainers, who have just enough knowledge to fit in an acorn, are now preaching useless words of so called wisdom. Each book has a little truth, with a lot of mumbo jumbo about the nature of intense training.

CHAPTER 1: MY PHILOSOPHY

In your quest for physical perfection it's important to know who and what you are. Are YOU a body or an incredible being? Are you a meat animal or more? Who are you really? What you know for certain is that you are somewhere. Therefore, you know you're in this game and it's called life. What you should know is that your every waking hour is . spent trapped in a body and imprisoned by a mind. It is difficult to understand this scenario, let alone figure it out. To figure it out, you must know the truth. What is the truth? What is the reality? There are many realities, but only one real truth. The truth is you are a being living symbiotically with a body. You want it to change. It doesn't. Your power over this body will determine your success in all you seek to do. With that said, let me relay what I have seen and experienced to be the truth. Let the record and responsibility of that truth, and the context of this text stand.

ANABOLIC STEROID CHAPTER

For me, it wasn't until I had won the Mr. America, and Mr. USA titles, that I started this madness. Convinced, against my better judgment, I started the campaign of body destruction in order to compete in the Mr. Universe contest. It was obvious that the competitors at that level were bigger and harder than me, so I agreed to take steroids. I started out cautiously taking one pill a day. When I started seeing the results, I began getting bolder and figured well, if one pill works, two will work even better. Before you know it, you're taking a handful of anabolics a day and injecting half a dozen shots a week. I actually believed nothing would happen to me. At the same time, there was no data as to the effect of this stuff, and after all, at that time, doctors were giving it to us!

Slowly, I learned the harsh realities. At first, it was my mental state. I was more aggressive - meaner. You could say I was outright nasty. Then the headaches came. Headaches? They were more like jack hammers pounding at my brain! Oh, and yes, then there were the nose bleeds. That was fun...

THE ORIGINS OF THE INSANE

"Steve! Steve! You're not going to believe what I have!. A voice cried just outside my office at the gym. "O. K. Mikey; what now?", I replied to the excited figure, now standing beside me. What Mikey had was a copy of a book. "Go ahead, open it," Mikey enthused. "What now," I thought. I gazed down at the cover which read, The Greatest Sports Stories of the Century. "O. K., O. K.," I replied. As I turned the pages, I noticed that there were stories of Mohammed Ali, Secretariat, Barry Bonds and other sport legends. I turned to the section Mikey had marked with a post-it, there before me was the name Steve Michalik. It was my story, or "gory", as the author put it. Me, Steve Michalik, among the greatest sports stories of all time! As I stood there in amazement, my mind flashed back to a time long ago, not so amazing...

It was cold, dark and lonely in the closet that night, especially for a ten year old. Not too different from any other night when my dad decided I needed to be taught a lesson. Yet something was different. It had nothing to do with the fact that I stopped crying when he hit me with his belt, or that I no longer protested being thrown in the closet. It wasn't that at all. It was me. I was different. The change had started just two nights before. After, once again, being cast into the abyss of the closet suddenly noticed a stack of old comic books piled in the corner.

ATOMIC FITNESS SYSTEM

The Atomic Fitness system of training involves all of these principles. When applied to exercise, they form the equation below - the secret to building muscle fast:

INTENSITY ÷ INSANITY = MASS

Whereas:
INTENSITY is defined by the increased amount of work or physical effort.
INSANITY is defined by either decreased time, or increased speed, combined with increased force to cause rapid growth by artificial means.
MASS is defined by the measure of a body's resistance to acceleration.
